Thirteen years ago, on August 1, 2012, two Serbian non-commissioned officers lost their lives on Kopaonik while carrying out the task of clearing the area of NATO bombs dropped during the 1999 aggression. Although the war had ended 13 years earlier, an enormous quantity of cluster bombs was scattered around the highest peak of Kopaonik, where a military radar position was located, which needed to be removed and destroyed. Unfortunately, one of those cluster bombs proved fatal for Staff Sergeants First Class Slaviša Marković and Nebojša Milić.
In remembrance of their sacrifice and out of respect for the sacrifice they underwent, a group of Serbian Army senior officers launched an initiative to hold a memorial cycling tour from the monument of Milunka Savić in Jošanička Banja to the memorial to the fallen pyrotechnicians at the top of Kopaonik. The event was held this year for the second time on August 1, 2025. This sports-memorial manifestation symbolically highlighted the centuries-old connection of Serbian military effort and self-sacrifice for the motherland through history. The continuity of that thread which unites all Serbian soldiers from the present moment to the Kosovo heroes confirms those Njegoš verses:
”Eternal torch, eternal darkness,
Neither burns out nor loses its light.”
As a brand, we will always support the organization of this sports-memorial event in memory of the heroic sacrifice of the pyrotechnicians on Kopaonik, as well as other members of the security forces who laid down their lives on duty for the glory of God and the good of the fatherland.
