ABOUT THE BOOK "WOLF IN A WAR STORY"
The war story anthology "Wolf in a war story" is dedicated to the special unit "Wolves from the Drina," an elite force of the Army of Republika Srpska as part of the Drina Corps.
The anthology was edited by the unit's second commander, Milan Jolović "Legenda".
On May 25, 1992, General Milenko Živanović, commander of the Drina Corps, established the unit as a reconnaissance platoon within the Zvornik Brigade. Just a year later, on May 8, it grew into the Podrinje Special Forces Detachment (POSS), serving as a maneuver battalion for the Drina Corps. The detachment comprised an armored company, a mortar battery, and a logistics company.
The battalion participated in the majority of operations of the Drina Corps. After the establishment of POSS, the unit fought against the 2nd Corps of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina towards Sapna and Kalesija.
Throughout the summer of 1993, the unit took part in Operation "Lukavac," liberating Trnovo and driving back ARBiH forces from Mounts Bjelašnica and Igman. During 1994, the "Wolves of the Drina" engaged the ARBiH 5th Corps within Tactical Group 3, taking part in a successful VRS counteroffensive in Cazin Krajina.
During the last year of the war, the unit remained engaged in combat, taking part in operations in Srebrenica and Žepa, before ending the war defending Mrkonjić Grad and Prijedor in Operation "Vaganj."
"The collection of war stories entitled 'Wolf in a war story' by Milan Jolović Legenda arrived at just the right moment, dusting off wartime events and bringing back memories of the difficult yet glorious days of our struggle for freedom, survival, and the future of new generations of our people."
As I was well aware of Milan Jolović's combat qualities, so too were his subordinates, his "Wolves," and many officers of the Army of Republika Srpska, and this knowledge spread during the war, crossing front lines to reach even the enemy ranks.
Apart from documenting war events, the anthology "Wolf in a war story" enriches readers sociologically and psychologically, while also exploring military art, doctrine, geopolitics, and international relations. While few might anticipate such a work to originate from Milan Jolović Legenda — a proven warrior and brave commander with a keen sense for justice, liberty, and the needs of others — this volume demonstrates he is no single-faceted individual, but a person of deep moral and spiritual fortitude capable of expressing himself in diverse domains.
This collection reinforces the well-known belief that the military profession is among the hardest even during peace, and certainly the hardest during war. Considering the length of the conflict, which for some lasted more than four years, almost all unit members came to regard themselves as professionals — soldier-warriors, putting aside their original professions.
Numerous battles in which the unit took part demonstrated that its members had two crucial qualities of professionals: character and competence (skill and ability). The soldiers consciously and wholeheartedly embraced their role as protectors of their people, while the officers proved their proficiency in directing armed combat.
We are confident that this collection will spark great interest among readers, as it brings valuable experiences — the wartime experiences of young people who, during the hardest days, defended others as well as their own lives. These stories are not focused solely on the past, but also offer new perspectives on life, backed by solid arguments.
